Their counsel suggests limiting sugar to under 10% of total daily energy intake, which equates to about 12 teaspoons (50 grams) for adults. Stricter guidelines propose reducing sugar to less than 5% of energy intake for even greater health benefits.
American dietary guidelines echo this advice, recommending individuals aged 2 and above to cap added sugar at less than 10% of total calories. In the UK, free sugar intake is advised not to exceed 5% of daily intake. Despite some variations across countries, the consensus is clear: excessive sugar is detrimental to health.
